Sensitive skin
Anytime we mention skin problems it seems that everyone has a story to tell:

About one-third of Australians reported to having a long-term skin condition!
Some common skin conditions include Eczema, Psoriasis, Acne, Contact Dermatitis and skin sensitivity.
Sun safety and Sensitive skin
Chemical sunscreens contain active ingredients that work by absorbing UV rays and converting them into heat - Which can sometimes cause stinging or burning sensations, The heat generated may
worsen the inflammation, as the sensitivity to heat is raised.
Some chemical filters, particularly oxybenzone, are known to cause allergic reactions or contact dermatitis.
People with eczema and psoriasis have compromised skin barriers, making them more prone to irritation.
Chemical sunscreens may contain preservatives, fragrances, or alcohols that further disrupt the barrier, making the skin more susceptible to dehydration, irritation, or flare-ups.
Chemical sunscreens excipient ingredients particularly oxybenzone, have shown to cause irritation and redness to eyes.
UV Radiation

The sun produces different types of energy:
Visible light – which we can see as sunlight ~ Infrared radiation – which we feel as heat. ~ UV radiation – which we cannot see or feel.
UV radiation is often confused with infrared radiation. The temperature, however, does not affect UV radiation levels.
-
Exposure to UV Radiation from the sun and other sources such as Solariums are the major cause of Skin cancer.
-
UV is higher especially if skies are clear. And while UV radiation is higher in summer than in winter, it is still present every day of the year.
-
You can check UV index online, get sun smart applications and even your phone weather app and it will give you the level, low, medium, high.
-
Sun protection times are issued by the Bureau of Meteorology
-
When the UV Index is forecast to reach 3 or above. At that level, it can damage your skin and lead to skin cancer. Sunscreen should be incorporated into your daily routine on these days.
How do natural Sunscreens work?
There are three types of UV radiation, categorised by wavelength: UVA, UVB and UVC.
• UVC is the most dangerous type of UV. Ozone in the atmosphere absorbs all UVC and it does not reach the earth’s surface.
• UVB causes skin damage and skin cancer. Ozone stops most UVB from reaching the earth’s surface, about 15% is transmitted.
• UVA can cause sunburn, DNA (cell) damage in the skin and skin cancer.
UV levels are affected by a number of factors including geographic location, altitude, time of day, time of year and cloud cover. This means that UV levels are higher in some parts of Australia than others even on the same day.

If you think of your skin as the ocean, chemical sunscreens work as a chemical submarine, absorbing into the skin you absorb the UV filters and all the other excipient ingredients in the formula;
A barrier boat, however, sits upon the skin with reduced absorption creating a reflective layer like an umbrella.

Some common ingredients in chemical sunscreens are Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, octocrylene,
Homosalate, Avobenzone, Parabens, MIT, Phenoxyethanol. That is being absorbed when you absorb a chemical submarine.
A lot of these ingredients have been shown to irritate the eyes, increase the risk of allergies, skin
irritations, acerbate eczema and psoriasis, and more
What about SPF?
- Higher SPF Ratings Require more sunscreen chemicals.
- SPF 15 blocks approximately 93% of UV radiation.
- SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UV radiation, representing a 4% increase with a higher concentration of active ingredients.
- Products with higher SPF ratings can often feel thicker on the skin due to the increased concentration of sunscreen agents.
Keep in mind no matter the SPF if you are swimming, sweating, and so forth it is always recommended to reapply.
